The Government of Ghana has launched the National Urban Policy (2026–2035) and the National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy (2026–2035) as part of efforts to build more inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities and communities.

The initiatives, officials say, require strong partnerships and coordinated action.

Speaking at the opening of the Ninth Session of the Ghana Urban Forum on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, on behalf of the Minister of Local Government, the Chief Director of Local Government and Chieftaincy, Mr Amin Abdul Rahaman, urged Ghanaians to “think nationally and take local actions” for inclusive, resilient and sustainable financing.

Mr Amin Rahaman said the policies seek to address critical urban development challenges, including unplanned settlements, inadequate housing, flooding, congestion and gaps in infrastructure and essential services.

He described the launch as an important step towards strengthening urban planning, improving living conditions in informal settlements and ensuring that Ghana’s rapid urbanisation becomes a driver of inclusive and sustainable development.

He further called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, development partners, traditional authorities, the private sector, civil society and communities to translate the frameworks into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.

The Minister also stated that recruiting qualified professionals such as architects and engineers is essential to prevent poor construction, mitigate flood risks and avoid urban congestion.
