The Ashanti Regional NPP has demanded the immediate release of its chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

At a press conference held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the conference hall of the office of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party described Wontumi's detention as unfair and urged authorities to reconsider the matter.

Addressing the media, the First Vice Chairman and Acting Regional Chairman of the NPP, Patrick Acheampong, said the party believes Wontumi has been treated unjustly, arguing that other individuals accused of involvement in illegal mining activities have not faced similar legal action.

"We will spit red saliva instead of white if they push us further," Mr Acheampong said, warning against what he described as continued pressure on the party and its supporters.

He added: "Wontumi is the last person they will arrest, never again will this happen."

The acting chairman also announced that party executives and supporters in the Ashanti Region would visit Nsawam Prisons on Friday, July 24, to express solidarity with Wontumi.

He, however, urged party members to remain calm, assuring them that the national leadership of the NPP was engaging efforts aimed at securing Wontumi's release.

Chairman Wontumi was recently convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison by an Accra High Court in connection with charges relating to illegal mining activities
