The Ashanti Regional former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice-Chairman, Kwabena Senkyire, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to pardon the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following reports of a 20-year jail sentence.
Mr Senkyire said the news of the sentencing has disrupted the party’s ongoing vetting proceedings in the region.
He told the media that, although reports indicate Chairman Wontumi has been sentenced to 20 years, they were still awaiting confirmation from his lawyers.
He noted that President Mahama has the power to show mercy, as he did for others when he assumed office.
“We have heard that he has been sentenced for 20 years, but we have to confirm from his lawyers. Some people were in jail, but when President John Dramani Mahama assumed office, he pardoned them.
"So President Mahama can also pardon Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako,” he stated.
The former NPP executive appealed to the President to set aside any political anger and act as a father to all Ghanaians.
“If you are father for all, you should put any anger aside and pardon Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako. This will bring peace and unity,” Mr Senkyire added.
He further said that Chairman Wontumi has played a major role in the NPP in the Ashanti Region and that his absence is being felt by the party.
