Mob justice kills 27-year-old in Sabon Zongo; one suspect arrested

Tragedy struck Sabon Zongo in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region when a 27‑year‑old man, Yussif Zakari, died following a brutal assault by a group of nine people who accused him of theft.

The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with residents and family members demanding justice and an end to mob justice.

According to the mother of the deceased, her son and another young man were accused of stealing money, stating that, the two were allegedly tied to a tree and beaten mercilessly by the mob.

“My son has not stolen anything. They tied two of them to a tree and beat them like animals. Now my son is dead. All I want is justice,” she said in tears.

The mother insisted that Yussif was innocent and that the mob had no right to take the law into their own hands.

She disclosed that the second victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at hospital. His condition is said to be stable.

The Assemblyman for the New Zongo Electoral Area, Alhaji Bawah, condemned the attack and described it as barbaric.

He confirmed that police have arrested one of the nine suspects involved in the assault.

“We have arrested one out of the nine people who assaulted them. The police are on the ground and we will make sure every single one is arrested and faces the law,” he assured.

Mr Alhaji Bawah urged residents to desist from mob justice and to report suspected criminals to the police for due process.
