Former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, has joined the race for the National Chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), presenting his extensive governance experience, institutional reform credentials and grassroots leadership record as key strengths for the party’s future direction.

With more than four decades in public service spanning Ghana’s decentralisation journey, democratic governance and international development advocacy, Opong-Fosu believes his experience places him in a strong position to provide strategic leadership as the NDC prepares for the next phase of its political development.

A founding member of the NDC, Opong-Fosu’s political and administrative career dates back to 1982 when he was appointed District Secretary under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) administration. He was among the early administrators involved in shaping Ghana’s decentralisation framework, which later informed the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly system.

His campaign is expected to draw attention to his record in local governance reform, having served as Head of the Local Government Service, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Member of Parliament for Amenfi East.

Opong-Fosu has consistently advocated stronger institutions, citizen participation and accountable leadership, principles he says remain central to building an effective political organisation capable of responding to the needs of Ghanaians.

Beyond Ghana, he has held several continental and global leadership roles, including serving as President of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-Africa), Vice-President of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) in Barcelona, and Chairman of the ACP Local Government Platform in Brussels.

His international engagements have focused on decentralisation, sustainable development, public administration reform and strengthening Africa’s voice in global governance discussions.

As the NDC prepares for its internal elections, Opong-Fosu is expected to campaign on a message of institutional strengthening, unity, discipline and renewed commitment to the values upon which the party was founded.

His leadership philosophy, captured in his motto “Restoring Values. Renewing Mindsets. Resetting Ghana,” emphasises ethical leadership, strong institutions and inclusive development.
