A 35-year-old woman has died after a two-storey residential building collapsed at Adenta New Site in the Greater Accra Region following heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening.
The deceased, identified as Margaret Kpeli, a mother of three, was trapped under the rubble along with her children when the structure caved in near the Da Yesu Ase Supermarket.
Children rescued, mother later confirmed dead
Her sister, Georgina Robinson, told Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday, June 4, that Margaret and her three children were inside the building when the collapse occurred during the downpour.
Emergency responders managed to rescue the children alive, though they sustained injuries and were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment.
Margaret was later retrieved from the debris in an unconscious state and handed over to the Adenta District Police. She was subsequently confirmed dead.
Fire service and police lead rescue operations
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), drawn from the National Headquarters, Legon, and Abelemkpe Fire Stations, were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident to support rescue operations.
A dog trapped in the rubble was also rescued alive during the operation.
In an earlier statement, the GNFS commended residents who assisted in the initial rescue efforts and acknowledged the coordinated response of emergency teams, including the Ghana Police Service and medical personnel, which helped bring the situation under control.
