Swedru High Court orders Kwesi Egyir Annan to pay GHS 50,000 in damages for defamation

The Swedru High Court has ordered Kwesi Egyir Annan to pay an amount of Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis as damages to the former Minister of Education in Charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah, after finding him liable for defamation.

The ruling followed a suit filed by the professor, who alleged that defamatory statements made by Kwesi Egyir Annan had caused serious damage to his reputation and professional standing.

After considering the evidence presented, the court held that the statements were false, malicious, and injurious.

In its judgment, the court emphasised the need for responsible speech, particularly in public discourse, and warned that individuals who make unsubstantiated allegations risk facing legal consequences.

In addition, Mr. Kwesi Egyir Annan has been directed to retract the defamatory statements and desist from making any further publications against the professor. The case serves as a strong reminder that freedom of expression must be exercised within the bounds of the law.

The lead counsel, Lawyer Justice Abdullah, seized the opportunity to reflect on the court's judgment.

"The court has brought everything to an end, and the court has demonstrated that Opanyin Agyir has caused damages to Prof. Yankah. The court has asked him to pay an amount of money that, when calculated in the old currency, is GHS 5 billion to Prof. Yankah.

"Secondly, the court has asked him to go to the media house where he disgraced him to apologise, and if possible, he should attend the programme where he made the statements that what he said is all false," he explained.
